Sansevieria, commonly known as the snake plant, is a popular indoor foliage plant. Repotting and division are essential steps to maintain its healthy growth. Below are the detailed steps and precautions for repotting and dividing Sansevieria:
I. Repotting Steps
1. Repotting Time
Best Time: Spring or early summer (March to June), when the plant is in its growing season and has a strong recovery ability.
Repotting Frequency: Every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots fill the pot and the soil becomes compacted.
2. Preparations
New Pot: Choose a pot that is 2 to 3 centimeters larger than the original one, with drainage holes.
Soil: Use loose, well-draining soil. You can use succulent-specific soil or a homemade mix (equal parts garden soil, leaf mold, and river sand).
Tools: Gloves, small trowel, scissors, etc.
3. Repotting Process
De-potting: Gently tap the outside of the pot to loosen the soil, then remove the Sansevieria from the pot.
Root Cleaning: Shake off the old soil and inspect the roots. Trim any rotten or excessively long roots.
Planting: Place a layer of pebbles or crushed stones at the bottom of the new pot as a drainage layer. Add some new soil, place the Sansevieria in the pot, adjust its position, fill with soil, and gently press down.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and place the plant in a ventilated, shaded area for 1 to 2 weeks to acclimate.
II. Division Steps
1. Division Time
Best Time: Spring or early summer (March to June), preferably done simultaneously with repotting.
Division Conditions: When the Sansevieria is growing vigorously, with many side shoots and well-developed roots.
2. Preparations
Tools: A sharp knife (disinfected), new pots, soil, etc.
3. Division Process
De-potting: Remove the Sansevieria from the pot and shake off the old soil.
Division:
Observe the base of the plant to locate naturally formed side shoots.
Use a disinfected knife to cut the side shoots along with their roots from the mother plant, ensuring each division has its own root system.
Wound Treatment: Apply a fungicide like powdered sulfur or wood ash to the cut surfaces to prevent infection.
Planting: Place the divided plants into new pots, fill with soil, press down gently, and water thoroughly.
Care: Place the divided plants in a shaded, ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight. Allow them to acclimate for 1 to 2 weeks before resuming normal care.
III. Post-Repotting and Division Care
Light: Avoid direct sunlight and place the plant in a location with bright, indirect light.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Water only when the soil surface is dry.
Fertilizing: Do not fertilize for 1 month after repotting or division. Start applying diluted fertilizer once the plant resumes growth.
Temperature: Maintain an ambient temperature between 15°C and 28°C, avoiding extreme temperatures.
IV. Precautions
Tool Disinfection: Disinfect the knife used for division to prevent bacterial infection.
Minimize Root Damage: Handle the plant gently during de-potting and division to avoid damaging the roots.
Soil Selection: Sansevieria prefers well-draining soil. Avoid heavy, clayey soil.
Division Size: Ensure each division has sufficient roots and leaves to increase the survival rate.
