Ferocactus gracilis cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

It needs full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Insufficient light will affect its health.

Temperature:

It likes a warm and dry environment and is not cold-resistant. The temperature needs to be kept above 10°C in winter.

  • Water

During the growing season (spring to summer), water once every 2-3 weeks. Water thoroughly and let the soil dry completely before watering. Reduce watering in winter to once a month.

  • Soil

Use well-drained cactus soil. Coarse sand or perlite can be added to enhance air permeability.

  • Fertilization

Apply low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once a year in spring.

  • Propagation

It can be propagated by stem cuttings. Before cutting, the cut needs to be healed and then inserted into well-drained soil.

  • Repotting

Growth is slow and frequent repotting is not required. Check the root system every spring. If the roots grow drainage holes or the plant becomes bound, repotting is required.

  • Pest and disease control

Pay attention to the prevention and control of scale insects and spider mites, and avoid root rot caused by overwatering.

  • Growth habits

Ferocactus gracilis is native to the arid areas of northwestern Mexico and is adapted to high temperature, low humidity and good ventilation.

It is a slow-growing perennial plant that usually grows alone and gradually becomes cylindrical as it matures.

The plant is drought-tolerant and is best grown outdoors in a sunny location.
