Astrophytum asterias Cactus Features
Shape: Similar to the base species, the Kikko cultivar has a flattened, globular shape, but it distinguishes itself with its heavily pronounced, geometric ridges on the ribs, giving it the look of a turtle's shell or a polygonal texture.
Ribs: The primary feature of Astrophytum asterias cv. Kikko is its mutated ribs, which form triangular or polygonal protrusions. These ridges create a very geometric and sculptural appearance, making it a standout cactus among collectors.
Areoles and Speckles: Like the standard Astrophytum asterias, Kikko has areoles (small raised spots) on the surface of its ribs, which are dotted with white speckles. The speckles give it a somewhat "frosted" or starry look.
Spines: This cultivar is spineless, much like other Astrophytum asterias varieties.
Flowers: Kikko also produces large, bright yellow flowers with orange centers, typical of the species. These flowers usually bloom in the spring and summer.

- Light
Bright, indirect sunlight is ideal. Kikko should be protected from extreme, direct sun during the hottest part of the day to prevent scorching, especially in hot climates. Indoors, it should be placed in a well-lit area, like a south or west-facing window.
- Water
Water very sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Like its parent species, Kikko is prone to root rot if overwatered. Watering should be reduced in winter when the plant goes dormant.
- Soil
Kikko requires well-draining, sandy soil. A cactus or succulent mix with added sand, perlite, or pumice is ideal to ensure excellent drainage.
- Temperature
Astrophytum asterias cv. Kikko prefers warm temperatures and should be kept above 5°C (41°F). It does not tolerate frost well, so in cooler climates, it is best grown indoors or moved inside during winter.
