Lophophora williamsii cactus Features

Appearance:

The plant is usually spherical or oblate in shape. The size of the sphere varies depending on the growth environment and individual differences, generally ranging from a few centimeters to more than ten centimeters in diameter. Its surface is covered with a layer of white or grayish-white fluff. This fluff not only gives Peyote a unique appearance and texture but also plays a certain role in protecting the plant, such as reducing water evaporation and resisting ultraviolet radiation.

Peyote has obvious ribs on the sphere. The number of ribs is usually several. These ribs make the sphere more three-dimensional and add a unique geometric beauty to the plant.

On the areoles, there are a small number of short white spines. These spines are relatively soft and not as hard and sharp as the spines of some other cactus plants, reducing the risk of harm to people.

Flower characteristics:

Peyote has relatively large flowers with a diameter of up to several centimeters. The flower colors are bright, usually pink or white. The flower shape is bell-shaped, and the petals are layered, giving a certain sense of three-dimensionality and layering.

The flowers generally open from the top of the sphere. When in bloom, it is like a beautiful corolla blooming on the sphere, adding bright colors and vitality to the whole plant.

Lophophora williamsii cactus Size:

  • Potted in a 2"-4" pot
  • The height of the plants and the flower pots can be made to your size.

Lophophora williamsii cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Peyote needs sufficient sunlight to grow normally. Sunlight is an important energy source for plants to carry out photosynthesis. Sufficient sunlight can promote the growth and development of Peyote, making its sphere fuller and the color more vivid. Therefore, when caring for Peyote, it should be placed in a sunny place such as a windowsill or balcony.

However, in summer when the temperature is high, strong direct sunlight may cause sunburn to Peyote. At this time, appropriate shading should be provided. Shading nets, curtains, and other items can be used for shading, or Peyote can be moved to a shaded place to avoid direct sunlight. While shading, it is also necessary to ensure that Peyote can receive a certain degree of scattered light to meet its growth needs.

  • Water

Peyote is relatively drought-tolerant. Watering should be appropriate to avoid water accumulation. Due toits growth in a dry environment, the demand for water is relatively low. Generally, water when the soil is completely dry. The dryness and wetness of the soil can be observed to determine whether watering is needed. When the soil surface turns white and dry, watering can be carried out.

When watering, it should be watered thoroughly to make the water fully penetrate into the soil, but avoid water accumulation. Water accumulation will cause oxygen deficiency in the roots, leading to root rot and seriously affecting the growth of the plant. After watering, the excess water should be drained in time to avoid water accumulation in the bottom of the pot or in the soil. In winter, Peyote grows slowly and has even less demand for water. The watering frequency should be reduced to keep the soil in a relatively dry state.

  • Soil

To meet the growth needs of Peyote, loose and well-drained sandy soil should be selected. Special cactus soil can be used, or the soil can be prepared by oneself. When preparing the soil by oneself, materials such as sand, perlite, and vermiculite can be mixed with ordinary soil to improve the air permeability and drainage of the soil.

When planting Peyote, a layer of gravel or ceramsite can be placed at the bottom of the pot to increase drainage. At the same time, attention should be paid to changing the soil regularly, generally once a year, to maintain the fertility and air permeability of the soil.

  • Temperature

As mentioned earlier, the suitable growth temperature for Peyote is 15℃ - 25℃. During the care process, the environmental temperature should be kept within this range as much as possible. In summer when the temperature is high, methods such as ventilation and spraying water can be used to reduce the environmental temperature. Ventilation can increase air flow and take away heat to lower the temperature; spraying water can increase air humidity and also play a certain role in cooling. In winter when the temperature is low, Peyote should be moved to a warm place indoors or insulation measures should be taken, such as using insulation boxes and covering insulation materials to prevent the plant from freezing.
