Thelocactus setispinus cactus Features

Shape: The cactus has a globular to cylindrical shape with prominent ribs that run vertically along the body. Each rib is lined with clusters of spines growing from areoles (small, circular areas along the ribs).

Spines: The spines are one of its key features. Each areole produces long, thin, needle-like spines, with the central spines being the longest. These spines are typically reddish-brown or yellowish, with the central spine often curved like a fishhook.

Flowers: Thelocactus setispinus is particularly admired for its large, showy flowers. The blooms are bright yellow with a red or orange throat and can measure up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter. The flowers appear in summer and are long-lasting, often blooming multiple times in a season.

Fruit: After flowering, the plant produces small, red or pink fruits that contain seeds. These fruits are attractive and add interest to the plant.

Thelocactus setispinus cactus Size:

Thelocactus setispinus cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Requires full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright light and benefits from at least several hours of direct sunlight each day. However, in extremely hot climates, some protection from intense midday sun may be necessary to avoid sunburn.

  • Water

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially during the cooler winter months when the cactus is dormant. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is a common issue for cacti.

  • Soil

Prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding sand or perlite to improve drainage helps prevent root rot, which can occur in overly moist conditions.

  • Temperature

This cactus prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It can tolerate brief periods of cooler temperatures down to 40°F (4°C), but prolonged exposure to frost should be avoided.

  • Propagation

Thelocactus setispinus can be propagated from seeds or offsets. It produces seeds after flowering, and these can be sown to grow new plants. The cactus also sometimes produces pups, which can be separated and replanted.
