Stenocactus multicostatus cactus Features

Shape: The cactus has an almost spherical body when young, gradually becoming more cylindrical as it matures. The most striking feature is the large number of ribs - usually between 30 and 50 - that are thin, undulating, and densely packed. This gives the plant its characteristic "brain-like" appearance.

Color: The stem of *Stenocactus multicostatus* is a rich green, though its color can vary depending on the amount of light it receives.

Spines: The areoles on the ribs produce small, straight, needle-like spines. These spines are typically white or yellowish and can vary in number, but they are generally not very long. The spines are often not dense, so the intricate ribbing remains visible.

Flowers: Stenocactus multicostatus produces small, funnel-shaped flowers that typically range from white to pale pink or purple with darker stripes. The flowers appear at the apex (top) of the cactus and can be up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. They usually bloom in spring and early summer, adding a delicate touch to the plant's overall appearance

Stenocactus multicostatus cactus Size:

  • Potted in a 4" pot
  • The height of the plants and the flower pots can be made to your size.

Stenocactus multicostatus cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Stenocactus multicostatus prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives in full sun but may need some protection from the harshest midday sun, especially in very hot climates, to avoid scorching. If grown indoors, a sunny windowsill or a location with ample natural light is ideal.

  • Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, but reduce watering significantly in the winter when the cactus enters dormancy. Overwatering is a common cause of problems, so it's important to avoid leaving the roots in wet soil.

  • Soil

The cactus requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. A standard cactus mix, or a blend of regular potting soil with added sand or perlite for drainage, works well.

  • Temperature

Stenocactus multicostatus prefers warm temperatures during the growing season, ideally between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to around 40°F (4°C) for short periods but should be protected from frost.

Safety of Stenocactus multicostatus cactus

Stenocactus multicostatus is non-toxic to humans and pets. However, its spines can cause minor injuries if handled without care, so gloves are recommended when repotting or handling the cactus.
