Melocactus neryi variegated

Body: The main body is dark green and ribbed with 8 to 12 prominent ribs. Each rib is lined with small, round areoles from which clusters of spines emerge.

Spines: The plant is covered with spines that are usually short, stiff, and radial, ranging from white to brownish-gray in color. These spines help protect the plant from herbivores and excessive sun exposure.

Cephalium: As *Melocactus neryi* matures, it develops a cephalium at the top of the plant. The cephalium is a cylindrical, woolly structure, typically red, pink, or orange, and it can grow a few inches tall. This structure produces the flowers and fruits of the cactus.

Flowers: Small, pink to red flowers emerge from the cephalium. These flowers are usually small, tubular, and only open for a short period. Flowering typically occurs in the warmer months.

Fruits: After flowering, the plant produces small, elongated red or pink fruits that contain seeds. These fruits can be quite ornamental and add to the plant's visual appeal.

• Light

• Soil

Prefers well-draining soil, ideally a cactus or succulent mix. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, as *Melocactus* species are sensitive to water retention.

• Temperature

Melocactus neryi thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 75°F and 95°F (24°C to 35°C). It is not frost-hardy and should be protected from cold weather. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) can be harmful.

• Propagation

Propagation is typically done through seeds, as Melocactus species do not produce offsets like many other cacti. Seeds should be sown in well-draining soil and kept warm and moist to encourage germination.

• Slow Growth

Melocactus species, including Melocactus neryi are relatively slow-growing. It can take several years for the plant to mature and develop its characteristic cephalium.

• Humidity

While it is a cactus Melocactus neryi does better with slightly higher humidity compared to other desert cacti. It should not be exposed to overly dry conditions for extended periods.
