Mammillaria perezdelarosae subsp andersonii Cactus Features

Shape: This subspecies has a globular to cylindrical shape and stays relatively small, making it an excellent candidate for cultivation in small pots. The body is covered in tightly packed tubercles (small, conical projections typical of Mammillaria species), which give it a textured look.

Size: It usually grows to about 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches) in diameter and 6–10 cm (2.5–4 inches) in height, staying compact even as it matures.

Spines: The most striking feature of Mammillaria perezdelarosae subsp. andersonii is its dense covering of radial spines, which are thin, white, and needle-like. The central spines, if present, are typically darker and stronger, often having a brown or reddish hue. These spines form a dense "cushion" around the cactus, giving it a soft appearance from a distance.

Flowers: This cactus produces stunning flowers that range in color from pale pink to white, usually with a darker pink or magenta stripe running down the center of each petal. The flowers form a ring around the apex of the plant, creating a crown-like display during the blooming season. The flowers are small, about 1–2 cm (0.5–1 inch) in diameter, but their quantity and vibrant color make them stand out.

Fruits: After flowering, the plant produces small, berry-like fruits that are often red or pink. These fruits contain seeds that can be used for propagation.

Mammillaria perezdelarosae subsp andersonii Cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

This subspecies enjoys bright light and should be placed in full sun or partial shade. When grown indoors, it thrives on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights. In very hot climates, protect it from the intense midday sun to avoid sunburn.

  • Water

Water sparingly, especially during the growing season (spring and summer). Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During winter, reduce watering significantly as the plant enters dormancy, where it needs little to no water.

  • Temperature

This cactus prefers warm temperatures and is not frost-hardy. Keep it in temperatures above 5°C (41°F), and if you live in a colder climate, it's best to grow it indoors or in a greenhouse during winter.

  • Soil

The cactus requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, with added pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to improve drainage. The soil should be porous enough to prevent water from lingering around the roots.

  • Dense Spines

The thick covering of white spines makes **Mammillaria perezdelarosae subsp. andersonii** particularly attractive and gives it a "frosted" appearance, making it stand out in any cactus collection.

  • Compact Size

Its small, compact size makes it ideal for growing in small containers or as part of a larger collection of miniature cacti.

  • Crown of Flowers

The beautiful ring of pinkish-white flowers that appears around the top of the plant during the blooming season is a highlight of this species.
