Astrophytum myriostigma prolifera cactus Features

Shape: The cactus has the characteristic star-shaped, ribbed appearance of Astrophytum myriostigma, with 3 to 7 ribs (most commonly 5). The ribs are smooth and slightly rounded, converging at the top to create the iconic bishop's cap shape. The proliferating nature of this variety means that over time, it can form dense clusters of multiple star-shaped stems.

Color: The body of the cactus is a grayish-green to blue-green color, often covered with small, white trichomes (hair-like structures) that give it a frosted or dotted appearance. These trichomes help the plant reflect sunlight and reduce water loss, contributing to its drought tolerance.

Spines: Like the standard A. myriostigma, 'Prolifera' is spineless. Its smooth, spineless surface is one of its defining features, making it easy to handle and visually appealing.

Astrophytum myriostigma prolifera cactus Size:

Astrophytum myriostigma prolifera cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

It likes sufficient sunlight, but needs appropriate shading in summer when the temperature is high to avoid sunburn caused by strong direct sunlight. It can be placed on a sunny windowsill or balcony.

  • Water

It is relatively drought-tolerant. Watering should be appropriate to avoid water accumulation. Generally, water when the soil is dry, and water thoroughly. Reduce the frequency of watering in winter.

  • Soil

It needs loose and well-drained soil. Special cactus soil can be used or perlite, vermiculite, etc. can be added to ordinary soil to improve drainage.

  • Propagation

This variety can be propagated from seeds, but it also readily produces offsets or "pups," which can be separated and replanted. To propagate, gently remove an offset from the mother plant, allow it to callus over for a few days, and then plant it in well-draining soil.
