Form: Palmate stem nodes are flat, blue-green, may be sub-round or round, about 12 to 20 cm in diameter

Thorns: The yellow thorns are usually curved, 1-3 cm in length, turn reddish brown or black with age, and can be up to 4.5 cm long. Glochids may become prominent and robust on older stem nodes, reaching a length of up to 1.5 cm

Flower color: Bright yellow flowers bloom in spring to early summer, sometimes with a light red color at the inner base of the flower, about 2 inches (about 5 cm) in diameter.

Fruit: The fruit is red, barrel-shaped, 3-6 cm long, 1.8-4 cm in diameter, containing colorless pulp and yellow seeds.
