Morphology: This is a perennial, upright shrub or small tree with a distinct main trunk. The branches are located at the top of the trunk, closely spaced and almost horizontal. The lower branches usually fall off, causing the trunk to darken with age.

Thorns: Yellow-brown thorns almost completely cover the stem, giving it a hairy appearance, but are actually impenetrable.

Flowers: The flowers are yellow-green, usually 3.6 cm long, with inner petals (inner sepals) that are yellow-green to white, sometimes with red tips.

Flowering: Blooms in spring (March to June) or occasionally in autumn (September)

Cylindropuntia bigelovii Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Cylindropuntia bigelovii requires bright, indirect light, similar to its natural desert habitat. It should be placed near a south-facing window, out of direct sunlight, and the plant should be rotated regularly to ensure even light distribution.

  • Water

Watering is not a matter of following a strict schedule, but rather understanding the plant's unique needs. Watch the plant for signs of thirst, such as drooping or dull leaves, and test the soil for dryness with your finger. Always check soil moisture before adding more water.

  • Temperature and Humidity

Cylindropuntia bigelovii thrives in temperatures between 70°F-85°F (21°C-29°C) and prefers low humidity. Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels and aim for 10%-40% to mimic desert conditions.

  • Fertilizer

Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring/summer), and reduce or stop fertilizing completely during the dormant season (fall/winter).

  • Pest and Disease Control

Maintain good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases. Check plants regularly for signs of pests and diseases and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed
