Spiral cactusSpecial Care or Planting instructions
- Light
Young spiral cacti should be placed in a mix of sun and shade, with at least 4 hours of sun per day, but avoid placing them in full sun. Mature plants should be placed in full sun.
- Water
Water regularly in the spring and summer, then reduce watering in the fall and winter. Cacti grow more slowly in cooler weather, so they use less water. If you don't reduce watering when the weather gets cooler, you'll be more likely to develop symptoms of root rot.
- Soil
Invest in a soil moisture meter to measure the moisture level in your cactus' soil.
- Drainage
Remove your cactus from its tray when watering so that excess water can drain properly. If you see standing water in the tray, dry it with a towel to avoid leaving the cactus sitting in water.
- Fertilization
Feed your spiral cactus twice a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced plant fertilizer. Do not fertilize in the fall or winter.
- Temperature
Avoid exposing your spiral cactus to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) or to rapidly changing temperatures. Drafty windows and air vents can weaken or even kill a cactus over time.
- Transplanting
Repot your spiral cactus every two years to renew the soil or when the plant outgrows the pot. Since these cacti grow tall, you'll want to use a heavy pot to prevent the cactus from tipping over.
- Propagation
The spiral cactus is one of the easiest succulents to propagate, and new cacti can be grown from simple cuttings. You can also harvest seeds and plant them in the spring, or cut off a branch and plant it in moist, well-drained soil.
