Browningia Hertlingiana cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Browningia hertlingiana requires strong bright light to grow well. They are adapted to growing in almost full sun exposure, and their powder-blue flesh is a mechanism to protect themselves from strong sunlight.

  • Water

During the summer growing season, water at least once a month if the average temperature is above 80°F. In hotter areas, watering may be necessary once a week. It is important to allow the soil to dry out before watering again. In hot, dry areas, water deeply in the evening to allow the cactus to absorb the water during the night. In more humid areas, not only can watering be reduced in frequency, but watering in the morning helps the plant have time to dry out before the humidity rises at night.

  • Soil

Well-drained soil is required, as they are very sensitive to rot in humidity and low temperatures. A soil mix specifically for cacti or succulents is recommended.

  • Fertilization

Use a fertilizer with a low nitrogen content in the spring and summer to help grow faster.

  • Cold tolerance

They need to be kept cool during their winter rest period and have some resistance to frost in dry conditions. They can tolerate short-term temperatures of -5°C or lower, but it is best not to expose them to temperatures below 5°C in cultivation.

  • Propagation

They can be propagated by seeds or stem cuttings. When cutting, make sure the cut is dry and callus is formed before planting in sandy soil.
