Ferocactus pilosus cactus Special Care or Planting instructions
- Growth rate
Slow growth at first, but performs well under cultivation conditions. They need to reach a medium size (about 20 cm in diameter) before flowering
- Soil
Use open and free-draining mineral compost with a small amount of organic matter (peat, humus) to allow the roots to breathe (because they are prone to rot)
- Transplant
Transplant every 2-3 years
- Watering
Prefers winter rest and should be kept completely dry in winter. Starting in early spring, gradually increase watering as the plant begins to grow until late spring when the plant should be in full growth. During the summer growth cycle, watering should be done regularly as long as the plant pot allows drainage and does not sit in a water tray (this plant needs a lot of water). But watering in direct sunlight should be avoided, a wet cactus in the sun may cause sunburn, or even fungal infection and death. Reduce watering from late summer to force the plant into a semi-dormant state, and by autumn it should return to a winter watering regime. Keep dry in winter with plenty of air circulation (but is somewhat resistant to wet conditions when grown outdoors if grown in a very well-drained substrate)
- Fertilization
Fertilize in summer with a high-potassium fertilizer
- Cold tolerance
Keep dry in winter at 5-10°C, but can tolerate occasional light frosts if kept dry before and during cold weather
- Exposure
Plants tolerate very bright conditions, if kept too dark they may become too lush and greener, and may be susceptible to rot from overwatering. Bright light can promote flowering and dense burr production, but may suffer from sunburn or stunted growth if overexposed to direct sunlight during the hottest part of summer
