Obregonia denegrii Cactus Features

Form and Size: Obregonia denegrii grows in a rosette pattern, resembling an artichoke, with tubercles (rounded, conical protrusions) arranged in spirals around a central stem. The plant is small, typically reaching a height and diameter of around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches).

Tubercles and Spines: Each tubercle has a triangular, scale-like shape with sharp points. At the tip of each tubercle, there is a small areole with woolly hair and a single short spine, which can vary in color from gray to black. The overall color of the plant is a blue-green to dark green, adding to its unusual look.

Flowers: In summer, Obregonia denegrii produces white to pale pink flowers, each about 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inches) in diameter. The flowers bloom at the top center of the plant and open during the day, adding an unexpected delicacy to its otherwise rugged appearance.

Fruits: After flowering, it produces small, greenish-pink, oblong fruits that contain tiny seeds, which can be used for propagation.

Obregonia denegrii Cactus Size:

  • Potted in a 12-18 cm pot
  • The height of the plants and the flower pots can be made to your size.

Obregonia denegrii Cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

This cactus thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate full sun if gradually acclimated. Too much intense sunlight without adjustment can cause sunburn, especially in younger plants.

  • Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is particularly dangerous for this slow-growing species. Reduce watering in winter when the cactus enters dormancy.

  • Soil

Use a well-draining cactus mix with added sand, grit, or pumice to simulate its natural habitat. Limestone chippings can also be added to the soil mix, as they are native to limestone areas.

  • Temperature

Obregonia denegrii is suited to warm temperatures but is not frost-tolerant. It should be kept above 50°F (10°C) and brought indoors or protected from cold temperatures in the winter.

  • Propagation

This species is typically propagated by seed, as it doesn't offset readily. Seed germination can be slow and requires patience, but it's the most effective way to cultivate new plants.

  • Growth Rate

This cactus is an extremely slow grower. It may take years to reach a size noticeable enough to transplant or display.

  • Pests

It's generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs and spider mites. Regular inspection and prompt treatment with insecticidal soap or neem oil help prevent infestations.
