Echinocactus texensis cv. Togenasi Ayanami Cactus Features

Form and Size: Like its parent species, E. texensis cv. Togenashi Ayanami remains low-growing, with a rounded, squat shape and flattened top. It typically grows to around 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) in diameter and reaches a height of around 10–15 cm (4–6 inches).

Spines: The "Togenashi" in its name means "spineless" in Japanese, and this cultivar has significantly fewer and softer spines than standard E. texensis forms. The spines are short, almost stubby, and may vary in color from gray to pinkish-white, giving the cactus a gentle, ornamental appearance compared to its spiny relatives.

Flowers: In summer, this cactus produces large, eye-catching flowers in shades of pink, often with a yellow throat. These blooms add a bright contrast to its muted green body, and flowering typically occurs during hot weather after periods of sunlight.

Echinocactus texensis cv. Togenasi Ayanami Cactus Size:

  • Potted in a 12-20 cm pot
  • The height of the plants and the flower pots can be made to your size.

Echinocactus texensis cv. Togenasi Ayanami Cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

E. texensis cv. Togenashi Ayanami thrives in full sun or bright indirect light. Outdoors, it can tolerate intense light, though some partial shade during the hottest part of the day can protect its skin. Indoors, place it in a spot where it receives plenty of bright light, such as near a south-facing window.

  • Water

Water infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once every month or two, as the plant will be in its  dormant phase and requires minimal moisture.

  • Soil

A gritty, well-draining cactus mix is best, ideally with added sand or perlite to prevent water retention. Like many Echinocactus species, it appreciates rocky or sandy soil that mimics its native habitat.

  • Temperature and Humidity

This cactus is drought-tolerant and hardy down to around 20°F (-6°C) if kept dry. It prefers warm temperatures and low humidity, making it suitable for outdoor rock gardens in warm, arid climates or as a container plant indoors.

  • Fertilizer

Use a diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in winter when growth is slower or halted.

  • Propagation

This cultivar is typically propagated from seed, although the unique features of the "Togenashi" variety can make seed propagation somewhat variable.

  • Spine Care

Due to its reduced spine structure, this cactus has increased sensitivity to sunburn. If kept outdoors, monitor sun exposure during very intense conditions.

  • Pests

Like many cacti, E. texensis cv. Togenashi Ayanami can occasionally attract pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. Regular inspections and prompt treatment with a gentle insecticide or insecticidal soap will keep it healthy.
