Agave potatorum var verschaffeltii 'Medio-picta' Features

Size: Agave potatorum 'Medio-picta' is a small to medium-sized agave, growing up to 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) in diameter. Its compact size makes it suitable for both container gardening and landscape use.

Leaf Structure: The plant forms a symmetrical, dense rosette of fleshy, sword-like leaves that are broad at the base and taper to sharp points. The leaves are thick and stiff, with smooth, slightly undulating margins.

Variegation: The most distinguishing feature of the 'Medio-picta' variety is its striking variegation. Each leaf features a wide, creamy white to pale yellow central stripe (the "medio-picta") that runs along the length of the leaf, flanked by bluish-green to gray-green margins. The variegation contrasts beautifully with the darker edges, giving the plant a bold, eye-catching appearance.

Teeth and Spines: The leaf margins have small, well-spaced teeth, and the leaf tips end in a sharp, dark brown to black terminal spine. These features add to the plant's architectural appeal but also make it important to handle with care.

Flowers: Like most agaves, *Agave potatorum* is monocarpic, meaning it will bloom only once at the end of its life cycle, after which the plant will die. However, the bloom is a spectacular event, with a tall flower stalk that can reach up to 10 feet (3 meters), producing clusters of yellow to greenish flowers. This usually happens after 10–15 years.

Agave potatorum var verschaffeltii 'Medio-picta' Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

This agave requires bright, direct sunlight to thrive and maintain its variegation. Full sun is ideal, but it can tolerate partial shade. Indoors, place it near a sunny window where it can get plenty of light.

  • Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately, but reduce watering significantly during the winter when the plant goes dormant.

  • Soil

Like most succulents, it prefers well-draining soil to prevent root rot. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, but you can also amend regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

  • Temperature

Agave potatorum 'Medio-picta' is not frost-tolerant and prefers warmer climates. It thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 90°F (15°C to 32°C). If grown outdoors, protect it from freezing temperatures by bringing it indoors or covering it during cold spells.

  • Propagation

Propagation is typically done through offsets or pups, which the plant produces around its base. These can be separated and replanted once they are large enough.

  • Variegation Sensitivity

The variegated form of this agave can be more sensitive to intense sunlight than non-variegated forms. While it needs bright light, be cautious of too much direct afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves, especially in hot climates.

  • Monocarpic Nature

After flowering, the main plant will die, but it will typically produce offsets or pups around its base before it does. These offsets can be replanted to continue the life cycle.
