Bougainvillea glare Mariel Fitzpatrick Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Full sun is required, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to ensure bright bract color and full flowering.

  • Water

Regular watering is required during the summer, allowing the soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering during the rainy season and winter can cause root rot, which is fatal to Bougainvillea plants.

  • Soil

Fertile, well-drained soil is required, with a slightly acidic pH (5.5-6.0) to ensure nutrient absorption, avoid heavy clay soils as clay may retain water for a long time, leading to root rot.

  • Fertilizer

Bougainvillea is a heavy feeder and needs regular fertilization to thrive. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer.

  • Pruning

Prune regularly to maintain the shape and size of the plant and to promote flowering. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to maintain air circulation and plant health.

  • Pest and Disease Control

Check the plant regularly for signs of pests and diseases and treat them promptly.

  • Winter Protection

Due to its inability to tolerate frost, in cold climates the plant will need to be moved indoors or protected with mulch during the winter.
