Carnegiea gigantea Plant Features

Shape:

The cactus typically has a tall, columnar trunk with several upward-curving branches or "arms." These arms develop as the cactus ages, sometimes creating a unique silhouette

Color:

The skin of the saguaro is a blue-green color, with numerous vertical ribs that expand and contract depending on the water content.

Ribs and Spines:

The saguaro has 12-30 prominent ribs, each lined with clusters of sharp, needle-like spines. The spines protect the cactus from herbivores and provide shade.

Flowers:

The saguaro produces large, white, nocturnal flowers at the tips of its arms and trunk. These flowers bloom in late spring to early summer and are pollinated by bats, bees, and birds.

Fruits:

After flowering, the saguaro produces red, fleshy fruits that are edible and often consumed by wildlife and humans. The fruits contain small black seeds.

Saguaro cactus Size:

  • The saguaro is one of the largest cacti in the world, capable of growing up to 40-60 feet (12-18 meters) tall. It can weigh several tons, especially when fully hydrated.

Large saguaro cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Requires full sun to thrive. In its native habitat, the saguaro is exposed to intense sunlight for most of the day.

  • Water

In cultivation, water the saguaro sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is highly drought-tolerant and can go for long periods without water.

  • Soil

Prefers well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils. It does not tolerate waterlogged conditions, as these can lead to root rot.

  • Temperature

The saguaro is adapted to high temperatures and can tolerate extreme heat. However, it is sensitive to frost and should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures.

  • Growth Rate

The saguaro grows very slowly, typically taking 10 years to reach just 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) in height. It can live for over 150 years, with some specimens living over 200 years.

Safety of Saguaro Cactus

Keep out of reach of children and pets. Place it in locations where curious hands or paws cannot reach it.
