Uebelmannia pectinifera Cactus Features

Form and Size: This variety grows as a solitary, spherical to slightly cylindrical cactus, reaching up to 20 cm (about 8 inches) in height and around 12 cm (5 inches) in diameter. Its dark grayish-purple to blackish-blue body, with deep ribs, sets it apart visually.

Ribs and Spines: It features prominent, narrow ribs lined with dense, comb-like spines that give it a textured appearance. These spines are arranged in a pectinate pattern, hence the name, and are typically short, thin, and slightly curved, creating a visually appealing contrast with the plant body.

Coloration: The epidermis varies from dark purple to greenish-black, often depending on sun exposure and the mineral content in the soil. In cultivation, it may exhibit a more muted color compared to specimens in the wild.

Flowers: In the summer, this cactus produces small, bright yellow flowers that bloom at the top of the plant. These flowers are tubular and contrast beautifully against the darker body, adding a pop of color.

Uebelmannia pectinifera Cactus Size:

  • Potted in a 12-20 cm pot
  • The height of the plants and the flower pots can be made to your size.

Uebelmannia pectinifera Cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

U. pectinifera var. pseudopectinifera prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun can be tolerated but may cause the skin to darken or lead to sunburn if exposure is excessive. Indoors, a bright, south-facing window is ideal, while outdoor plants benefit from partial shade in very hot climates.

  • Water

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring and summer), water every few weeks; in winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant will enter dormancy.

  • Soil

This species requires well-draining soil with a high mineral content. A specialized cactus mix with added sand, pumice, or grit to mimic its native quartzite-rich soil is ideal. Avoid organic-rich soils, as they retain too much moisture.

  • Temperature and Humidity

U. pectinifera is sensitive to cold and prefers temperatures above 50°F (10°C). It does best in dry conditions with low humidity, so it's important to avoid overly humid environments and provide good airflow.

  • Fertilizer

Feed once in spring with a diluted cactus fertilizer to support growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can affect the plant's natural growth patterns.

  • Propagation

Propagation is generally done by seeds, as this cactus rarely produces offsets. Seeds should be sown in warm, bright conditions, but germination can be slow and requires patience.

  • Sun Sensitivity

Be cautious with sun exposure, as this cactus is prone to sunburn. Gradually introduce outdoor plants to direct sunlight if transitioning from indoor environments.

  • Pest Management

Watch for pests like spider mites and mealybugs, which can harm the cactus's delicate surface. Regular inspections and mild insecticidal treatments, if needed, are helpful.
