Cleistocactus strausii Cactus Special Care or Planting instructions

  • Light

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water in spring and summer when the top layer of soil is dry.

  • Water

Water every five weeks in the fall if the soil is dry. Keep Cleistocactus strausii dry in winter to prevent wet soil combined with cool temperatures and dormancy from causing root rot.

  • Fertilization

Fertilize with a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring and it will be sufficient year-round.

  • Propagation

It can be propagated by cutting a branch from Cleistocactus strausii and rooting it, but this will leave a scar at the base of the main stem. If using divisions for propagation, remember to let the wound heal for about a week.

  • Soil

Cleistocactus strausii grows well in porous soils with little nitrogen. If planted in clay, add 50% sand to improve the soil structure.

  • Temperature

Prefers temperatures above 70°F and can tolerate low temperatures of 50°F to 59°F. If temperatures drop below 50°F, consider moving the plant indoors.

  • Pruning

Cleistocactus strausii does not require frequent pruning, but if desired, some stems can be removed to keep the plant looking nice.
