Size: Ariocarpus retusus cv. Cauliflower is a small, slow-growing cactus that typically reaches a diameter of 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) when mature. Its compact size makes it suitable for container cultivation and as a focal point in cactus collections.
Shape: The most distinctive feature of this cultivar is its unique, bumpy, and irregular tubercles that cover the entire plant body. These tubercles give the plant a warty or cauliflower-like appearance, which is where the cultivar gets its name. Unlike the typical smooth and geometric tubercles of standard Ariocarpus retusus, the "Cauliflower" form has a much more textured and irregular surface.
Color: The plant's body is typically a pale green to grayish-green, though it can take on different shades depending on light exposure and growing conditions. The irregular tubercles may also show variations in color, adding to the plant's overall uniqueness.
Spines: Ariocarpus retusus species are generally spineless, and this cultivar is no exception. Instead of spines, the plant has woolly areoles, which are small patches of white, wool-like hairs found at the tips of the tubercles. These woolly areoles can sometimes cover a significant portion of the plant, adding to its distinctive appearance.
Flowers: Despite its unusual appearance, Ariocarpus retusus cv. Cauliflower can produce flowers, typically in the autumn. The flowers are usually white, pink, or magenta and are relatively large compared to the size of the plant. - Light
Ariocarpus retusus cv. Cauliflower* thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon, but intense midday sun should be avoided as it can scorch the plant. A bright, filtered light source is ideal for maintaining healthy growth and vibrant colors.
- Water
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can be fatal to Ariocarpus species, as they are highly susceptible to root rot. During the winter, when the plant is dormant, watering should be reduced significantly or stopped altogether.
- Soil
